Benefits of Dusk to Dawn Outdoor Lights
Dusk to dawn light fixtures provide reliable illumination exactly when it’s needed, instead of relying on manual switches or complicated timers.
- Instant Security: A well-lit perimeter is one of the best ways to deter unwanted activity. These fixtures ensure your loading docks, alleys, walkways, and entrances are never left vulnerable in the dark.
- Hands-Free: These lights turn themselves on at sunset and off at sunrise. You never have to worry about arriving at a dark facility or accidentally leaving the lights on all day.
- Natural Daylight Tracking: Unlike standard timers that require seasonal adjustments as days get shorter or longer, these fixtures naturally adapt to the changing sunset times throughout the year.
- Lower Operating Costs: By ensuring the lights run only at night, you avoid wasting electricity during the day, helping keep utility bills predictable.
- Built for Bad Weather: These lights handle rain, snow, and extreme temperatures for reliable year-round performance.
- Superior to Traditional Bulbs: Unlike old fixtures that flicker or need to warm up, these LEDs turn on instantly at full brightness with clean, even light.
Where to Use Dusk to Dawn Lighting
Dusk to dawn outdoor lights are best suited for high-traffic or high-security zones.
- Loading Docks and Service Entrances: Provide safe visibility for overnight deliveries and early-morning shifts.
- Parking Lots and Perimeters: Ensures dark corners and fence lines remain visible to security cameras and staff.
- Barns and Outbuildings: Delivers essential visibility for rural or agricultural structures where manual switching is impractical.
- Commercial Entryways: Maintains a professional, well-lit appearance for retail or office fronts after business hours.
How to Choose the Right Brightness for Dusk to Dawn Lights
The brightness of your dusk to dawn lighting depends on the size and purpose of the area you want to illuminate. Consider these factors:
- Building Perimeters and Entryways (1500 - 3000 Lumens): Use these for standard doorways or the sides of a building to provide clear visibility without excessive glare.
- Driveways and Loading Docks (3000 - 6000 Lumens): This range is ideal for areas with vehicle traffic or nighttime deliveries where safe navigation and clear security camera footage are required.
- Yards and Large Open Areas (6000 - 16,000 Lumens): For expansive spaces such as back lots, large barns, or industrial perimeters, high-output fixtures provide broad coverage.
- Mounting Height Considerations: Increasing your mounting height requires higher-lumen packages to maintain ground-level light levels. Lower mounting heights need fewer lumens but may require more fixtures to avoid dark spots.
Dusk to Dawn Outdoor LED Lighting
All our dusk to dawn lights, or dusk to dawn barn lights, are certified for quality by third parties, like UL, ETL, and DLC. Not many online retailers carry these certifications. Why? Because their outdoor dusk to dawn lights haven't been properly tested. Which is a big reason why fixtures end up failing and costing you time and money you don't have. Since our dusk to dawn outdoor lights have passed all quality tests, they're certain to work for the 50,000 hours they're promised to, without any hiccups. Even so, because we stand by our products, we still offer a 5-year warranty on our dusk to dawn lights, in the rare event something does happen.

What is a dusk to dawn outdoor light?
A dusk to dawn light carries a small photocell light sensor that automatically turns on when ambient light levels are low and turns off when light levels are high. For this reason, you want to make sure that your dusk to dawn light is not exposed to any other lights, or else it may turn off, thinking it's daytime when it's actually night. Dusk to dawn lights are typically found in barns, porches, driveways, sheds, yards, and garages.
FAQs About Dusk to Dawn Outdoor Lights
Can outdoor LED dusk to dawn lighting with a photocell be bypassed?
We don’t recommend rewiring a dusk to dawn LED light fixture, but we do recommend using a shorting cap in place of the photocell. The shorting cap will complete the circuit, and the dusk to dawn light fixture will operate as long as there is power provided.
Will any dusk to dawn light fit my existing pipe?
Our dusk to dawn lights will fit on pipes between 1-5/8" (1.625") and 1-3/4" (1.75"). They're also able to be mounted directly to a wall, if desired. If you'd like to keep the dusk to dawn light fixture off the wall or mounted to a round pole and no arm exists, check out our arm accessory.
Can you add a dusk to dawn light sensor to outdoor lights?
Yes. One way is to buy a dusk to dawn sensor bulb. Just take out your existing bulb within the fixture and replace it with the sensor bulbs.
Do dusk to dawn outdoor lights use a lot of electricity?
Dusk to dawn lighting does not use a lot of electricity. While many believe that dusk to dawn lights will raise your electric bill, that is actually not true. LED lights require less power and use less wattage at maximum brightness. Incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs require more energy to produce less light; for example, incandescent lights only utilize 10% of the electricity they use to produce light, while the other 90% goes toward heat. Since LED lights are more efficient than fluorescent or incandescent bulbs, you can leave them on all day without worrying about your monthly electric bill skyrocketing.
Can you put an LED bulb in a dusk to dawn porch light?
LED bulbs can be put into a dusk to dawn light fixture because most LED bulbs are compatible with outdoor fixtures. In fact, it is advisable to replace traditional incandescent or fluorescent bulbs with LED lights if you plan to leave them on all day. Compared to traditional light bulbs, LED dusk to dawn lights have a longer lifespan, lower heat emission, and instant-on capabilities that avoid flickering, making them more efficient and cost-effective.
Can you make any outdoor light dusk to dawn?
You can make any outdoor light a dusk to dawn light in two different ways. The first way is to change the existing outdoor light fixture with a dusk to dawn light fixture. Dusk to dawn outdoor light fixtures can be pricey and require installation. Once you install the light fixture, you can use any bulb to light it.
The alternative method is to find an LED light bulb with a built-in photosensitive light sensor. LEDs with light sensors function similarly to dusk to dawn light fixtures. By default, this type of LED bulb uses built-in sensors to detect outdoor lighting and switch it on or off accordingly. However, many LED light bulbs designed to mimic dusk to dawn lighting have an "on" setting that allows you to leave the light on all day.
